This past Earth Day, the Packaging Association of Canada (PAC) celebrated sustainable leadership at their second Gala in Toronto. Winners of the 2009 Sustainable Packaging Competition were recognized at this event for efforts made to lead the way toward environmental sustainability.
“The purpose of the competition is to recognize the leaders of the packaging community for their efforts in advancing the sustainable packaging movement in Canada and beyond,” explains James Downham, President and CEO of PAC.
In order to determine who should receive a sustainable packaging award, PAC examines key elements of the sustainable package system and sorts them into three categories:
1. Raw materials;
2. Branded Packages; and
3. Facilities and/or Processes.
The PAC Sustainable Packaging Competition started in 2008 and the inaugural Gala was held symbolically on Earth Day, April 22, 2008, with Justin Trudeau as the keynote speaker. PAC hopes to see this event become an annual celebration.
On behalf of the EcoLogo Program, we would like to congratulate the following sustainable packaging winners who were honoured at the 2009 event for their environmental initiatives:
