From Earthcycle Packaging to Tomatoes…

When purchasing strawberries or kiwi fruit at the local Loblaw’s, Kroger or Wegmans, one rarely takes into account the packaging that surrounds this food. A closer look reveals packaging that is typically made of a thermoplastic called PETE (Polyethylene terephthalate). While PETE (also goes by PET) containers can be recycled, they cannot be composted and could be costly to landfill. An alternative to PETE is palm fiber – a renewable resource that has the ability to compost in less than 90 days. In comparison to PETE trays, palm fiber trays can be turned into a healthy contribution to soil that can be used to produce tomatoes. Imagine that! read more

EcoLogo Supports Wal-Mart Sustainability Initiatives

Around the time same time last year we wrote about how the ‘tide is changing’ at Wal-Mart.  We now report that the tide is turning “green.”

The New York Times recently published a piece about how shoppers may soon see tags on Wal-Mart items that provide information about the product’s footprint, water usage and even air pollution generated. Reviewing the Green Cleaning Standard

The latest standard under review by the EcoLogo Program has everything to do with cleaning products used regularly in homes, buildings, schools and hospitals. As these products can have an impact on human health, green cleaning is even better than traditional methods as it can lead to healthier indoor air quality. With the rise of infectious diseases and the attention sanitation is receiving, cleaning products are an essential part of the solution. Government Hears Greenwashing

Greenwashing – that act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental benefits of a product or service or the environmental practices of a company – is being taken seriously by government and the public alike. Greenwashing has become so rampant, it seems, that it has become a matter of legal consequence.

In an earlier blog, we mentioned that Scot Case recently presented his personal opinion on how greenwashing is eroding consumer trust to the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection as part of a hearing this past June around fair green marketing practices. read more
