TerraChoice has recently launched the first greenwashing game, “Name that Sin,” which is designed to help educate consumers to avoid the pitfalls of greenwashing - the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service. This interactive game puts players to the test as they try to answer practical questions that will help them become smarter consumers!
“Name That Sin” is a custom-built Flash application that was developed by Standard Media Services with help from TerraChoice. It was designed for the 18-35 crowd, but is fun for anyone, and can be played on the Sins of Greenwashing site, or on Facebook. The game features many interactive and challenging questions that require players to identify eco-labels, and distinguish which sins are being committed on a variety of different “green” products.
The game is meant to inform and educate people about credible and fake eco-labels as well as how to avoid being misled by false green marketing claims. During the game, a player will be asked ten questions randomly. At the end of a round, the player will be given a score and tips on how to better identify legitimate eco-labels. Individuals are meant to play more than once to improve on their score and we highly encourage challenging friends to try the game out.
“Name That Sin” is an excellent way to help users increase awareness and knowledge about what it means to buy green. After each question, the game will explain why an answer was right or wrong and provide tips for users to be aware of when purchasing “green”. The game is an excellent learning tool as players can apply the information they learned to their daily lives and avoid being deceived by false or misleading green claims.
“Name That Sin” can be played at www.sinsofgreenwashing.org and also on Facebook as an application. So, visit the sites and test your skills! You may just walk away from the game as a smarter consumer!
