Buy Greener Power in 2010

Every New Year, a lot of people make a lot of resolutions that they may or may not keep. One act individuals and companies alike should commit to this year is to buy cleaner, greener electricity.

In hops Bullfrog Power

If you haven’t heard of this Canadian 100% renewable electricity provider, pull up a chair.

Bullfrog Power began providing practical energy choices back in 2005 and they’ve been helping individuals and companies cut their carbon emissions ever since. To date, Bullfrog Power offers renewable electricity to everyone in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

How do they do this?

Bullfrog Power matches electricity use with 100% renewable electricity by injecting into local electricity grids. Bullfrog’s electricity comes from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by the EcoLogo Program.

Bullfrog also uses the collective demand of its customers to promote the building of new renewable, low-impact generation facilities. Several new wind turbines have been commissioned in Canada as a result of the support of Bullfrog Power’s customers.

According to Bullfrog:

Every megawatt hour (MWh) of low-impact renewable electricity that is produced and injected onto the grid by renewable power generators reduces the amount of electricity required from polluting sources such as coal. These cleaner generation sources deliver several benefits including producing no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants and minimizing other environmental impacts. For every MWh of low-impact renewable electricity that is produced and injected onto the grid, a corresponding Green Electricity Certificate (GEC) is created to represent the positive environmental benefits associated with producing green power.

Why all the fuss about conventional electricity generation?

Electricity generation produces a large share of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide. These, in turn, contribute to smog and acid rain. Fossil fuel-fired electric power plants also emit carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change.

Leading environmental organizations like WWF-Canada, the David Suzuki Foundation and the Pembina Institute stand behind greener energy, advocating for the choice of clean, low-impact renewable power as a meaningful way to help address climate change.

So instead of putting your New Years resolutions on the shelf for the year, set an example for friends, neighbours, business leaders and policy makers and sign up for100% low-impact renewable electricity today.
