Pool and Spa Water to get Greener

pool-and-spa-standard.jpg

Taking a dip in a backyard pool or hot tub in North America is about to become healthier for people and the environment. The EcoLogo Program is nearing the launch of its first standard for Pool and Spa Water Treatment Products and is turning to stakeholders to review the second draft of this standard. The stakeholder comment period will be open for 30 days. The deadline for public comment on this draft is Monday, April 19, 2010.

The environmental benefits expected to be produced through this standard, to encompass water treatment products used to maintain above and below ground conventional residential pool and residential spas, are: a substitution of less intrusive raw materials, a reduction of environmental hazards, and an increase in renewable resource and biobased products.

There are a number of different product classifications for residential pools and spas according to specific water treatment needs or functions. The subcategories in this standard include: Oxidizers, Algaecides, Balancers (pH increasers, pH decreasers, or alkalinity increasers), Enhancers (clarifying agents, flocculants, metal sequesters, or conditioners), and Phosphate Removers.

The EcoLogo Program is inviting anyone interested in providing comments on the second draft Pool and Spa Water Treatment Products standard to email Angela Griffiths at: agriffiths@ecologo.org, or call: (613) 247-1900 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              (613) 247-1900      end_of_the_skype_highlighting x 221.
